Welcome to the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) group at Rice University. The DSP group has been actively teaching courses, conducting research, and publishing results since 1968. Much of this activity has taken place in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department and the Ken Keneddy Institute for Information Technology (K2I)

History of DSP at Rice

  • 1968, DSP research at Rice was started
  • 1969, ECE 531 on digital signal processing was first taught
  • 1970, Published paper on using Prony's method to design IIR filters
  • 1972, Attended second Arden House workshop on DSP
  • 1973, Parks and McClellan developed their FIR filter design method based on the Remez exchange algorithm
  • 1974, The number theoretic transform was developed
  • 1975, Don Johnson joined the ECE faculty from MIT Lincoln Labs
  • 1980, The prime factor FFT algorithm was developed
  • 1984, Discovered Gauss described the FFT in 1805
  • 1985, A book on the FFT was published
  • 1988, A book on Digital Filter Design was published
  • 1988, Work on wavelet based signal processing was started
  • 1992, A book on Array Signal Processing was published
  • 1992, Richard Baraniuk joined the ECE faculty from Illinois
  • 1994, A book on DSP Exercises using Matlab was published
  • 1995, Bibliography of FFT research was published
  • 1996, Texas Instruments made a historic $7M gift to Rice in recognition of its "leadership in DSP solutions"
  • 1995, Don Johnson becomes the president of the IEEE Signal Processing Society
  • 1999, Rice DSP's 30th anniversary celebration: DSP30
  • 2000, Robert Nowak joined the faculty from Michigan State University
  • 2000, DSP's website was revamped and a new logo added to prepare for a new millenium of leadership in DSP solutions.
  • 2001, Michael Orchard joined the faculty from Princeton University
  • 2005, CSB70, an event in honor of Sidney Burrus' 70th birthday and 40 years of great research and leadership in digital signal processing
  • 2005, Dean Sidney Burrus retired and became Emeritus Professor
  • 2005, Farinaz Koushanfar joined the faculty from University of California, Berkeley

Over the past 20 years, Profs. Baraniuk, Burrus, Johnson, Orchard, and Parks have been elected Fellow of the IEEE for their work in DSP and have received major Signal Processing Society awards. Prof. Nowak has received Young Investigator awards from the NSF, ARO, and ONR.

Industrial Collaboration

There has been a history of collaboration between the DSP group at Rice and industry. This has taken many forms. It has been membership in the Corporate Affiliates Program, the granting of research funding in DSP, supporting a DSP graduate student, or contribution to the Computational Engineering Building campaign.
